Sample shore excursions: Alerce Mountain Lodge & Lake of Reflections; Petrohué Rapids & Frutillar. Day 3: Darwin Channel Chilean Fjords Fjords more spectacular than those in Norway or Alaska? See them here along the southern coastline of Chile...a 1,000-mile maze of virgin-forested islands, glistening glaciers and more fjords than in all of Scandinavia. Day 4: Amalia Glacier Canal Sarmiento The west side of the Sarmiento Canal is flanked by Madre de Dios Island, with towering limestone peaks. Amalia Glacier is blue and white, and home to penguins and seabirds. Day 5: Punta Arenas, Chile 7 A to 8 P This remote town, pioneered by Yugoslav settlers and sheep ranchers, sits on rolling hills overlooking the Strait of Magellan. Sample shore excursions: Torres del Paine National Park; Antarctica: A Spectacular Flyover; Scenic Patagonia. Day 6: Cockburn & Beagle Channels Day 6: Romanche, Alemania Glaciers Day 6: Francia & Italia Glaciers Day 6: Ushuai, Argentina 1 p to 7 p The southernmost town in the world, where dominating peaks loom on three sides; the fourth opens to the Beagle Channel, where sea lions bellow and king crab rules. Sample shore excursions: Tierra del Fuego National Park; Penguins & Beagle Channel. Day 7: Cape Horn & Drake Passage Cape Horn marks the southernmost point of South America. The cape's steep and rocky cliffs rise up and extend into Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. Ancient mariners dreaded rounding the Cape because of its reputation for bad weather. Day 8: Wilhelm Archipelago Skirt jagged ice cliffs to Anvers Island, home of the U.S. Biological Research Center, Palmer Station. (Perhaps we can entice the scientists to come aboard the ms Rotterdam to share their findings.) Next: the wide cobbled beaches of Cuverville Island, home to Antarctica's extensive colony of gentoo penguins. And Petermann Island, where French explorer/scientist Dr. Jean-Baptiste Charcot studied a colony of Adélie penguins during the winter of 1909. Day 9: South Sherland Islands Deception, Livingston & Half Moon Islands (Scenic Cruising) Don't be deceived: Deception Island is really the crescent-shaped caldera of a volcano active enough to heat Antarctic waters to bathwater temperatures. The ms Rotterdam will sail right by the crater, where several colonies of chinstrap penguins make their home on the black-sand beaches. More surprises await at Half Moon Island where whales are often seen patrolling the shores; and Livingston Island, home of huge elephant seals. Day 10: The Antarctic Sound Hope Bay (Esperanza Station), Paulet & Elephant Islands (Scenic Cruising) At Hope Bay the scarlet chalets of Esperanza, an Argentine military and scientific station, stand in stark contrast to the white ice. On Paulet Island as several million Adélie penguins nest on every available beach. And at Elephant Island, hear the riveting account of Shackelton s ill-fated expedition and the crew s heroic daily struggle to survive. Day 11:. At Sea Day 12: Pt. Stanley, Falkland Islands 8 A - 4 P Scotland under the Southern Cross: moorlands, pubs, red phone booths, sheep ranches, a "cuppa tea." Plus penguins of every type: gentoo, Magellanic, king. Sample shore excursions: Stanley Highlights; Sparrow Cove Penguin Adventure. Day 13 - 14: At Sea Day 15: Buenos Aires 6 A - 9 P In the "Paris of South America," find ten million portenos passionate about futbol, tango and theater at midnight. A short flight away, Iguazu Falls roars in the jungle. Sample shore excursions: Tango Show; The Palaces of Buenos Aires; Iguazu Falls. Day 16: Montevideo, Uruguay 8 A to 6 P Friendly and genteel, Montevideo honors colonial customs: long lunches, siestas, high tea. Nearby: Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest city in Uruguay (ca. 1680) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sample shore excursions: Colonia del Sacramento; A Gaucho's Life. Day 17 & 18: At sea Day 19: Rio de Janeiro* 7A - overnight Its stunning setting and joyous lust for life make Rio a cidade maravilhosa, "marvelous city." Ipanema, Copacabana, samba - the words alone conjure Brazilian paradise. Sample shore excursion: A Night Out in Rio - Dinner & Samba Show; Beaches of Rio & Sugarloaf Mountain; Corcovado & Rio City Tour. Day 20: Disembark *A Visa is required for Rio de Janeiro
Expect to see hundreds of emperor penguins and Adelie penguins waddling to the sea; pods of killer whales hunting dinner; sea lions & amazing glaciers. Enjoy the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, often called the "Paris of South America." Explore Rio de Janeiro with an overnight stay...plenty of time to take in dinner & a samba show or enjoy the beaches and Sugarloaf Mountain.
