Continue to South Georgia Island to explore glacier-draped coastlines, and witness thousands of stately king penguins flocking on a single beach.

The expedition cost includes meals, accommodations, and excursions as indicated in the itinerary; services of the National Geographic expert or expedition leader and local guides; ground transportation; most transfers; baggage handling; gratuities (except for those for the ship or train crew, where applicable, unless otherwise noted in the itinerary); and pre-trip materials. Itinerary - 18 Days

Days 1 & 2 — U.S./Buenos Aires, Argentina or Santiago, Chile

Sofitel Buenos Aires or Grand Hyatt Santiago
(Day 2: L)

Days 3 & 4 — Ushuaia/At Sea

Fly to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Join a catamaran cruise of the Beagle Channel before embarking the ship for our journey across the South Atlantic.
(B,L,D)

Day 5 — Falkland Islands

Each Falkland Island is distinctive in its beauty, and the archipelago boasts the largest albatross colony in the world, thousands of irresistible Gentoo, rockhopper, and Magellanic penguins, as well as herds of fur and elephant seals. Stroll white-sand beaches, sail beneath vaulting cliffs, and hike across windswept moors where the waving tussock grasses glow with sunlit yellows and sage greens.
(B,L,D daily)

Days 6 & 7 — At Sea

As we journey across these southern waters, there's time to take full advantage of the ship's amenities: relax in the spa, sauna, or observation lounge.
(B,L,D daily)

Days 8 through 12 — South Georgia Island

The following days are devoted to exploring the spectacular coastline of South Georgia Island. The schedule is flexible, and throughout our journey there will be opportunities for walking, hiking, kayaking, and taking Zodiac excursions. (B,L,D daily)

Depending on weather and sea conditions, we plan to make some or all of the following stops:

King Haakon Bay
This is the site of Shackleton's landfall after his rigorous voyage in the 23-foot lifeboat, James Caird. Its untouched beaches, mountains, glaciers, and nesting wandering albatross offer a great introduction to the wilds of South Georgia.

Grytviken/Shackleton's Grave
Wander on foot, visiting the ruins of the abandoned whaling station of Grytviken and its onsite museum on the island’s natural history and the role of the whaling industry here. A host of seabirds, penguins, and marine mammals can be seen as we hike along the coast to the cemetery where Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried.

Salisbury Plain/Elsehul Bay
At the height of breeding season, the northern tip of South Georgia is said to have more wildlife per square foot than any place else on Earth. Here, we are likely to spot thousands of king penguins; colonies of gray-headed, black-browed, and wandering albatross; colorfully crested macaroni penguins; and fur and elephant seals.

Right Whale Bay
Land on black-sand beaches, inhabited by southern fur seals, elephant seals, and king penguins, plus dozens of other bird species.

St. Andrews Bay
St. Andrews Bay is teeming with wildlife. Hike past fur and elephant seals and a colony of more than 100,000 king penguins.

Gold Harbour
Gold Harbour is home to elephant seals, thousands of fur seals and tens of thousands of penguins, including a colony of aristocratic king penguins.

Cooper Bay
Whalers once sought shelter in this small bay. Here we are likely to encounter king, gentoo, and macaroni penguins; prions; petrels; terns; and perhaps Weddell seals.

Stromness Bay
Stromness offers views of cliffs and glaciers that Shackleton and his companions descended in order to complete their famed crossing with the Endurance in 1916. Explore the glacier's ice face by Zodiacs; and walk along a pebble beach, passing king and gentoo penguins, and hundreds of fur seals.

Days 13 & 14 — At Sea

As we journey across these southern waters, there's time to take full advantage of the ship's amenities: relax in the spa, sauna, or observation lounge.
(B,L,D daily)

Days 15 & 16 — Falkland Islands

We return once more to the island archipelago that teems with the wonders of nature and wildlife. Take a last walk along the beautiful white-sand beaches, and visit the remote Victorian town of Port Stanley.
(B,L,D)

Days 17 & 18 — Ushuaia/Buenos Aires or Santiago/U.S.

Our journey ends in Ushuaia this morning, with time to explore before boarding our chartered flight to Buenos Aires (Explorer) or Santiago (Orion). Continue on an overnight flight to the U.S.
(B,L)

Please note there is an additional day in the Falkland Islands on the Mar. 7, 2017, and Mar. 6, 2018 departures.
